Silk-screen images allow you to revitalize plain walls and give originality to the interior. Drawing by a template is an easy and fast way to get clear and vivid graphics. All work on the design of the walls takes from several minutes to two hours. In shops for creativity there is a wide selection of finished products, but the most original images can be obtained by making stencil templates for decor with your own hands.
Types of Templates
The use of stencils allows you to update the design of the room without large investments, add a twist to the design. With their help, you can perform decor on the walls and ceiling of various rooms: in the kitchen, in the room, corridor and bathroom.
By the method of application, decorative stencils are divided into disposable and reusable. The former are usually made of thick paper, for the latter they use the following materials:
- Cardboard. It is most convenient for making templates with your own hands.
- Vinyl film, transparent or color. It is convenient to cut stencils out of it, but use them with caution, since the paint easily spreads on a flat surface. In the absence of skill, you can lubricate the picture and stain the wall. Vinyl templates are made in rolls and sheets. If a large area is covered by the same pattern, it is more convenient to purchase or make several stencils yourself, which are joined together and attached to the wall. - PVC sheets up to 4 mm thick. Templates for volumetric drawings are cut out of them. Prepared holes are filled with plaster or decorative putty and left to dry completely. After removing the stencil, a convex image remains on the wall.
Patterns differ not only in the material of manufacture, but also in the type of pattern. They are as follows:
- Single With their help, monochrome images or gradient images are applied.
- Combined. They are designed for multi-color patterns and represent a series of stencils, each of which is painted with a different color. To match the details, they make special marks that combine in the manufacture of images.
- Anti-stencils. On these templates, drawings are cut out in the opposite way, that is, they leave what is deleted on ordinary templates. When paint is applied to the surface, an image of the primary color is obtained, surrounded by a painted halo.

Ready-made vinyl film templates are purchased in stores. You can make a stencil with your own original image in two ways:
- Order in companies engaged in the manufacture of promotional products. They cut images on film using a plotter.

To make your own template for a stencil, you will need simple tools and materials: a sharp knife, carbon paper, cardboard or vinyl film. The prepared picture must be enlarged to the required size, printed and transferred to cardboard or vinyl. The contours of the pattern are cut with a sharp knife. Cutting should be done carefully so that there are no bumps and burrs.
Screen drawings are applied not only to painted surfaces, but also to plastic, glass, wood, wallpaper. Small decorations are suitable for furniture, large - for walls and ceilings. The main condition for applying a beautiful picture is a smooth main surface. It will not be possible to apply to a relief image. Sticker stencil on the surface is done using masking tape and special glue.
For painting, acrylic paints are usually used in jars and in the form of aerosols. Such dyes fit well on almost any material, dry quickly and do not fade. To work with the anti-cliche, only a spray can or spray gun is used; paint can be applied to other templates with a roller or brush.
